Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to postpone the implementation of three new criminal laws set to be enforced from July 1. Banerjee's letter emphasizes the need for a fresh parliamentary review of these laws before they are enacted.

The new laws in question are the Indian Justice Code, the Indian Civil Defense Code, and the Indian Evidence Act. These are intended to replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, respectively. The primary objective of these new laws is to expedite the delivery of justice to citizens across the country.

Banerjee's letter suggests that delaying the implementation would provide an opportunity for thorough parliamentary scrutiny and potential amendments, ensuring that the new laws serve the intended purpose effectively and justly.

Additionally, the Department of Personnel and Training has issued a memorandum to all central ministries and departments, instructing them to incorporate the subject matter of these new criminal laws into various training programs.
